Common Myths Regarding Social Media
A+ A- A Main Content Many social media myths and misconceptions are being bought into by business owners. Unfortunately, believing these myths can hurt your dental practice. In reality, social media is absolutely crucial to the success of your business, and avoiding it can cost you new patients, money, and even your dental practice.
Social Media Myths
In order to use social media to help your practice succeed, it’s important to understand its benefits. Below are a few of the common misconceptions we’ve heard about social media:
- “My patients aren’t using social media”
One of the main myths regarding social media is that only young people are using it. This may have been true a few years ago, but recently the numbers have shifted. In fact, it’s now found that older adults are using Facebook while the younger crowd is moving to Twitter and Instagram. This means that, whether your target audience is teens or older adults, your patients are using social media.
- “Followers will block you if you post too often”
While this statement largely depends on what you’re posting, this is still a myth. Avoid sounding like a broken record by posting the same information time and again. Instead, make sure your posts are interesting, informative, and meaningful, or that you’re engaging your patients and including them in the conversation. You can also link to relevant articles in the dental community, just make sure these articles aren’t going too far over your patients’ heads.
- “Social media is too difficult/time consuming”
If you’re new to social media, it can be a bit daunting. However, it’s easier and less time consuming that you’d think. In fact, chances are that a member of your team is already social media savvy and, in this case, it’s okay to delegate the social media responsibilities to someone who already knows how it works!
In the end, despite the few downsides of social media, using it will dramatically improve the success of your dental practice.
