Challenges Facing Modern Dentistry
A+ A- A Main Content The dental profession is continuously changing and improving with new technology. Because of the ever-changing nature of dentistry, modern dentists face challenges that the previous generations of dentists never had to worry about. From money problems to office and staff issues and patient care, dental practices all over the world are being affected.
Challenges Facing Modern Dentistry
Below are a few of the main concerns currently putting dental practices at risk:
- Student Loans – Dental student loans are often incredibly high and for many dentists, they can take years or even decades to fully pay off. In fact, even some of the ‘older’ dental practices can be in student loan debt. We’ve seen 20-year-old practices that struggle with student loans. Lastly, combine these student loans with the increasing dental school tuition costs, and it can spell financial disaster.
- Corporate Dentistry – Private dental practices are being threatened by corporate dentistry. Many of the larger brands are beginning to incorporate a wider variety of services. These can include groceries, household goods, yard care needs, clothing, and even optometry. If these brands incorporate dentistry services as well, they may be able to offer lower prices, putting private dental practices at risk.
- Lack of Support – Many dentists believe that dental schools should be more effective at helping graduating dentists find dental jobs and become established. Some believe that this lack of support for newer dentists will threaten the success of future dental practices.
